Notes - Music Team Planning Review #7
7/13/2010

  1. New songs
    • Schedule of introduction to chorus
      • 8/2 Let's Do It
      • 9/6 My Romance
    • Teaching tracks
      • Teaching quartet recording schedule
      • Other
        • Craig Adams
        • Purchased tracks, etc.
        • Decision:
          • Give a song to Craig - Let's Do It - remind him to keep it barbershop
          • Teaching quartet will have to learn to sing in front of chorus
  2. Director and Music Team: Working together (See notes on other topics below)
  3. We will rehearse at Horizon on 7/26 as a test and
    • Bruce will evaluate
    • If Bruce likes it, we will stay, leave risers at Horizon
      • In closet if it is ready
      • In trailer behind Horizon if not
  4. Contest Prep
    • Run-up to contest: most of the heavy lifting will be done in the next 4 weeks
    • We will back off some toward the end
    • But we will seek venues to perform the set between now and Contest
      • Need to do 3 performances
      • Find venues
      • Do performances once we feel comfortable with songs enough to perform in front of an audience
      • Talk with Tod Kowallis
      • Talk with Glenbard South
    • Jon will call DG South
    • Jack Fagan will get Don Davia to get in touch with some retirement communities
    • Eric Sutherland is available to do phone calls
      • Get him Joan Boutelliere's phone number for possible get-together 2nd Monday, 9/13
      • Get in touch with Tori Hicks, director of Midwest Crossroad Chorus
    • Reminders to the chorus
      • Mindset in rehearsals - establish that when you walk through the door, you're in a place that is all about our singing
      • Changing culture
      • Make out badges signifiers of our commitment and seriousness?
    • SP/Choreography for Contest Set (Eric & Bill Morgan)
      • See typed sheet
      • Bruce: Keep it minimal
      • Soft shoe for George, not tap
      • Use move in Gene Kelly-Donald O'Connor "Fit as a Fiddle" ("Singin' in the Rain") - terrific, but might be too complicated
      • Bruce will review the proposal, will discuss with his wife (who has choreographed such things) and get back
  5. Taping
    • This Monday chorus will sing song at very beginning and non-tapers will tape
    • They will tape immediately
    • We need to explain that this is not an auditio
      • it's a tool for us and the singer to use to improve.
      • It does NOT need to be perfect - just needs to be DONE
  1. 2010 Cabaret and 2011 Spring Show
    • Cabaret - chorus performance expectation
      • Chorus to sing 2 or 3 numbers at director discretion - NOT contest tunes - Joe T will decide & direct
      • Ed talk with Jay to explain
      • Two organized quartets will sing for us
      • Pickup quartet contest
      • Luau and silent auction
    • Spring Show
      • We need a show committee in charge of this show - Jay on board with this
      • Chorus songs: Need to determine what we're singing, including our new contest set
      • Other participants?
        • Jay has letters out to multiple quartets
        • Heather Krones's quartet has accepted already?
        • The college quartets from IL District?
  2. Chorus Performances - Next 30 months
    • Fall District Contest 9/2010 - Determine International 2011 qualifiers
    • Christmas 12/2010 - we need to choose music for the first half - Bruce will review and come up with ideas
    • Spring Show 3/2011
    • Spring Contest 4/2011 - District Championship - Will need our International package to sing here.
    • International 7/2011 (Kansas City)
    • Fall District Contest 9/2011 - Determine International 2012 qualifiers
    • Christmas, 12/2011
    • International 7/2012 (Portland, OR)
    • Fall District Contest 9/2012 Determine International 2013 qualifiers
    • Christmas 12/2012
    • NOTE: Winning the District in Spring, 2011 means we have a bye for 2 years, assuming contest formats remain the same
    • Other performances
      • We will do music outside our normal comfort zone
      • We will look at the sorts of things Westminster is doing - men's a cappella, different and more versatile
      • We will look at traveling shows, including shows outside US
    • Music choice and prep
    • Purposes
      • Perfection of performance - always singing at 85, 90 or above
      • Contest practice
      • Presence in larger community
      • Recruitment
      • Revenue
  3. "VLQ" formation
    • Will probably come out of Bruce's eval of each voice, which starts next week
    • Bruce will start with the Music Team next week at 6:30 PM
    • Criteria
    • Schedule
  4. Coaching plan
    • Purposes and plan: Kevin Keller & Joe Connelly
      • Kevin: will work on music things
      • JC will work on conveying the message and bringing energy to the performance
  5. Groupanizer Use for Music Team
    • Suggestion: Have some training courses on Groupanizer for chorus member before several rehearsals
    • MT will use it, as will Board
